DEFINED by OTHERS ~ New from M.C.V. Egan

A word, a single word defines a moment for Anne. She needs to find a new one when her spouse leaves her at the age of 47, coming out of the closet literally in a closet. She finds herself back in her hometown amongst her high school friends which she left behind in her past.

An inheritance from a friend leaves her with the means to meddle and spy on the lives of some of their mutual acquaintances. In an attempt to run from her reality Anne gets engrossed in a game of "fun" and "flirtation" with her friend and fellow sufferer Connie at her side. Anne however did not read all the files and what to her is fun games turns into a deadly reality. It is no longer a game.

Life, death and not even a defining word can stop the reality of manipulation.

SURVIRAL a novel by KEN BENTON

The deadliest flu season in a hundred years is about to turn a whole lot deadlier. When an accident at a famous medical research facility lets a mutated avian flu strain out, a nightmare scenario unfolds. Before authorities can react, millions are infected—and that’s just the beginning. The mortality rate exceeds 80%. Leaders and elected officials soon learn the man-manipulated virus respects neither rank nor stature. The resulting chain reaction leads to a collapse of modern society—even in Colorado, where no cases of the killer strain have yet appeared.

Clint Stonebreaker, a happily-married software engineer living in Denver, doesn’t like watching the news. He especially doesn’t let Jake, his wacky doomsday-prepping brother, watch it when he visits. But when chaos goes viral through the entire country, Clint and his wife Jenny are forced to acknowledge reality. They find themselves hitting the road with their gun-enthusiast neighbor to escape the deteriorating city. Their goal? Reaching Clint’s hunting cabin in Southeastern Colorado and trying to make a homestead of it.

They don’t get far before running into a gauntlet of obstacles. Colorado seems to have become a giant sociological experiment, with dire consequences for making the wrong decisions. The spirit of American resolve is pitted against the ugly realty of criminal opportunism in every direction they turn. Ironically, Clint isn’t sure which is worse: being forced to survive in the midst of civil unrest, or knowing he’ll have to admit to Jake that he was right. Assuming he can find him…

I'm probably a lot like you. I look around at the world we are living in and shake my head. The situation is unsustainable. But hey - we had a good run, right? Strong societies typically last about 200 years, and that's right where we are. Maybe we will keep it together a while longer.

Even if the nukes don't fly and the viruses don't mutate, I cannot see our great grandchildren sitting complacently while we dump an unfathomable mountain of debt on their shoulders. At some point, the new generation will say nuts to that and refuse to accept being born into bondage to pay the bills for all the fun their recent ancestors had. This is exactly how revolutions start.

Going off the grid and getting out of the system is not just for crazy people any more. It's also for very sane people. When you see an unsustainable situation and remain a willing part of it, hoping it holds together a little longer, what is it you are really hoping for? Don't psychologists call this living in denial? The type of economic collapse that looms on the horizon will make your bank accounts worthless. Hoarding gold is a viable option, but how much of it can you really store in your city home and hope to use for money one day? Where will the food and clothing come from that you hope to trade it for?

Rural land and homesteading knowledge may be the only valuable things in the near future. This is what prepping is all about. Nobody says you have to wait until the SHTF to bug out. You can start building everything now and get out of Dodge well in advance. That way, you can get all set up with chickens and goats as well. When you have goats, you have milk - and when you have milk, you have all the dairy products you will ever need.

Knowing what you know, and having the ability to prepare now, you have no excuse when the day comes upon you like a thief in the night. The modern-day city life becomes less fulfilling once you see how you can be living an off-grid, self-sustained life on your own little mini-farm. Instead of saving money in a soon-to-be worthless bank account, you can stock up on the things that really count. You can be making new friends with like-minded neighbors. You can be building a real future.

If you are like me, this knowledge will eat away at you until you actually start to do something about it. Listen to your nagging inner self. Shift your focus. Become passionate about establishing the only form of security left to us.

I lift my glass of homemade wine and wish you the best of fortune. Maybe I will see you out in the country someday. Cheers.

Ken Benton

About the Author

Johanna K. Pitcairn has dreamed of becoming a writer since childhood--authoring her first novel at the age of nine, and countless poems, stories, and screenplays by the age of seventeen. Later, rather than pursuing a career as a director and screenwriter, she decided to go to law school, driven by her father's opinion that "writing does not pay the bills."

Ten years later, she moved to New York City, which inspired her to go back to the excitement, wonder, and constant change of being a writer. Pitcairn is a huge fan of psychological-thriller novels and movies, and delves into her hopes, fears, friends, enemies, and everything in between in her own writing.

Aside from being an author, I am also a mom to a beautiful little girl. I tell everyone I named her after my great-grandmother (because that's the mature answer), but really, I named her after my favorite princess - just so happens I got lucky and they had the same name...If I wasn't a writer, I would work on a horse ranch - I'm an animal lover (in addition to dogs, horses are at the top of my list). I wear flip-flops pretty much everywhere I go. I would rather stay awake until 5 am than get up at 5 am (years of bar tending have left their mark), if I can, I'm going to the beach AND I will always be nice to people who bring me chocolate...or coffee...if you bring me both, I'll probably love you forever.

A gypsy at heart, I write the way I live, following the story wherever it may lead, always ready to start the next one. This is clearly reflected in my body of work which to date includes everything from Children's Lit to Thrillers.

THAT DAY in SEPTEMBER and Other Rhymes for the TIMES by LIZ LIME

Have you always written in rhyme when you felt the need to vent?
No, not at all. At the time, I had been reviewing a recently published book of nursery rhymes, and as I was looking through the book the idea to translate my thoughts and feelings into rhyme began to take form. The origins of nursery rhymes, especially the old English classics, are fascinating to me. Most of the rhymes are politically motivated; Mary, Mary Quite Contrary – for example is believed to be about Mary Queen of Scots, and nothing at all to do with gardening. Ring Around the Rosy  a seemingly harmless child’s rhyme and playground game is actually referring to the Black Plague which ravished England in the 1600s.  READ MORE

That Day in September and Other Rhymes for the Times by Liz Lime is a perfect and fun Hanukkah present, stocking stuffer or grab-bag gift for every age!

From the playful teasing of shoe fashionistas, to more somber and thought-provoking themes, the messages in the rhymes from this first-time author are cleverly written and craftily disguised in the age-old style and beat of the English classics.

Praise for That Day in September
“Both entertaining and thoughtful, this book is a good choice for families looking to foster a sense of social conscience...bright and engaging, easy to read and a pleasure to hold and look at.”  –– Kirkus Reviews

An exclusive interview
with Liz Lime
Recently, we sat down with Liz Lime for a lively look into the intersection she created between the world of children's nursery rhymes and her social commentary on the state of the world around us. Here's what she had to say.

What was the inspiration for the book?
The banking crisis and the presidential debates of 2008. For the first time in my life, the adverse effects of a changing government, and the banking crisis had a direct effect on my life. Up to that point, my business was thriving, people were busy working, and I was getting ready to make major renovations to my house.  In 2009, when things started to go horribly wobbly for the country’s economy, I realized that the economic downturn wasn’t about to change direction any time soon.  I was actually shocked to find that I didn’t have the confidence to move forward with a home renovation loan, and I was really, really ticked off! I felt frustrated. I had so many opinions about so many subjects, but like so many others, I felt I didn’t have a voice, at least not one strong enough to be heard by those in power.

A 3rd Time to Die and other works by GEORGE A. BERNSTEIN

Ashley Easton rescues a badly abused horse, deciding to return to show jumping, the passion of her youth. The animal gives unquestioned love, something lacking from her husband, Keith. But when Ashley begins to compete, she is terrified as the show course seemingly changes into an old forest and the jumps appear as real walls, fences and trees. Her thoughts spill through her head in elegant French. As she attacks the fences with an unfamiliar, fearless abandon, she begins winning every competition. Craig Thornton, an avid horseman, happens upon Ashley’s first competition, entranced as he watches her jump her horse, Injun. Mystically drawn toward each other, it’s as if they knew the other…but from where? After several missed opportunities, they finally meet, becoming fast friends, their love of jumping horses a mutual bond. Ashley seeks therapy to address a strange terror swamping her whenever she’s intimate. During hypnotic regression, she’s stunned to find herself in two apparent past lives, first in the 17th Century, on a fox hunt as the fearless French horsewoman who fills her head while jumping, and again, 150 years later in Philadelphia, a shipping tycoons daughter. Both times she is fulfilled by glorious romance, followed by the terror of their brutal murder while making fervid love in a forested glade! The doctor says these are figments of her subconscious, but he’s shaken, knowing the truth. He realizes those were real past lives, and their killer may be lurking again, nearby. Ashley and Craig soon discover more than friendship. As these two newly rediscovered lovers struggle to free themselves from broken marriages, others plan to fulfill a 300-year-old legacy of death.

Traci Wooden ~ MY BEAUTY FOR YOUR ASHES

Image of Traci Wooden-Carlisle
Traci Wooden-Carlisle began writing poetry and short stories as soon as she was able to form words on paper. She used that as a way to creating worlds, as well as, to communicate with God. A native of Los Angeles, California, she grew up attending United Methodist Church under the leadership of a pastor whose heart was for youth. Once she finished college at she found herself at a loss. She felt caught in the transition between childhood and adulthood. She surrounded herself with saints and volunteered her services as a graphic artist. Through the early-morning prayer, all night Friday prayer and 3-day shut-ins she started on her journey toward her most desired gift, an intimate relationship with God.
Today, Mrs. Wooden Carlisle lives in San Diego with her husband, David Carlisle. She serves as a church Office Manager, teaches fitness classes, continues to praise the Lord through dance, and is currently writing her second book in her Christian-fiction series.

My Beauty For Your Ashes is the first book, of a Christian-fiction series, that leads you through the lives of four people striving towards different marks with unexpected connections.
Though they hail from backgrounds that are worlds apart, it only takes one fateful accident to rearrange their priorities and set them on roads that intersect, forcing them to acknowledge the relationships they can’t do without.
Elder Paige Morganson has worked hard to overcome the anger, hate, and abuse of her past; Mason Jenson is a self-made man who has been able to create his own fortune and build a home life with his wife and child void of God’s help…so he thinks,; Elder Brandon Tatum’s, new in town, has prided himself on not making a move until he’s heard God; Victoria Branchett has ruthlessly survived the death of her only daughter by fierce determination, but is the strength she has relied on enough to see her through a failing marriage and an ailing grandchild?
This novel merges colorful characters facing one untimely circumstance after another, and mixes in a serious spin on how one views God, both inside and outside of His will. Of course, this is just the beginning. More people emerge from behind the scenes; some to help and others, to hurt. With everything happening simultaneously, one would almost question if God is able to truly fix and heal everything, and the readers will see just how far each person's faith (or lack thereof) will carry them. As they sift through the debris of past dreams and hopes left by the wayside, they are offered a lifeline and given an opportunity to receive God’s Beauty for their ashes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating story line December 12, 2014

What would it take to corrupt someone and break their spirit, drive them to commit crimes and go insane? Pondering these deep questions, venturing into my own soul, is what I’m left with after putting down, MCV Egan’s, brilliant and cleverly written new age saga. What would or could possibly drive a group of 47 year old women to vengeful madness? Can we blame menopausal hormone changes; inherent psychological or post-traumatic stress incident predispositions; fear and denial of aging; or perhaps a mid-life crisis? Certainly any one of these, all of these, or other factors enter into the equation. It takes very intelligent writing to get a reader to a place of really having a look at themselves; but as the author so astutely states toward the end, in the narrative reflection, “can I get to know and forgive, look in the mirror and feel love,” and poignantly she points out, “it’s in there,” one cannot help but self-reflect.
What starts out with the death of a High School friend, Amanda, two of the main characters, Anne and Connie, get together to further the plan of the deceased; to hack cyberspace, make up fake accounts, and dupe other High School friends. The only reasoning is it’s for the forwarding of the challenge posed by the deceased, Amanda. But is that all? Intertwined in the plot is ostensible heartache and betrayal as we learn that Anne’s husband, Frank, and Connie’s husband, Mike, have become lovers. It would make sense then that from this raw vulnerable place they would be justified to embark on furthering Amanda’s sick cyber game of trumped up romance connections with innocent victims.
Whether it’s the pot smoking duo, tainted cookies, (aka: cookie mickey), the inner drive toward friends and to belong at all costs, finding love, and fear of losing it, something is driving the deceit and it is in this curiosity that the glue to the story is woven together with to make it a compelling read. This is a clever story with metaphysical new age scenes, current social medial insertions, and all that makes it ring contemporary. As the plot is carried along to the last and shocking ending, when the last page arrives and is shut it’s hard to stop thinking of this story. That’s the mark of really good writing.

“Defined by Others” by MCV Egan is a gripping, contemporary novel that touches on a lot of nerves of modern society. It is set amongst a circle of women in their late forties. Amanda dies at the age of 47 and leaves her friends Connie and Anne a ‘game’ to play. The latter women share not only the loss of their friend but also the loss of their husbands, and are happy to play.
Said game involves the fraudulent assumption of fake personas and playing with people’s emotions and hopes on social media platforms. Egan shows a lot of empathy in the way she created her characters – both, the victims and the ‘players’. The story also highlights perfectly how we are happy to accept what we want to and how easy it is to be misled (again, victims and players).
The title introduces another theme, and a profound one at that: What defines us: Partners, love or children? When they are taken away, who are we and what do we become?
As in her previous work, Egan also brings in Astrology, psychic readings and similar new age topics and weaves them into the storyline and characters, showing the thin dividing line between the honest and the fake practitioners in that field.
I was promised an entertaining and light hearted romantic read when I was sent an Advance Review Copy of this book, but I found myself hugely engaged with the characters, their problems and the underlying questions for all of us. The book contains a wealth of emotional wisdom, great quotes and a group of fascinating and relatable characters. Superb.

Superb.

Conditions
When Charles and Tony’s mother dies the estranged brothers must struggle to pick up the pieces, particularly so given that one of them is mentally challenged and the other bitter about his place within the family.
The conflict is drawn out over materialistic issues, but there are other underlying problems which go to the heart of what it means to be part of a family which, in one way or another. has cast one aside.
Prejudice, misconceptions and the human condition in all forms feature in this contemporary drama revolving around a group of people who attend the subsequent funeral at the British South Coast.
Meet flamboyant gardener Charles, loner Simon, selfless psychic Elaine, narcissistic body-builder Edgar, Martha and her version of unconditional love and many others as they try to deal with the event and its aftermath.
